Addressing the Crisis in Our Youth: Why Emotional Awareness and Mental Health Matter

Nationwide, we are witnessing an alarming rise in school violence and, tragically, more frequent school shootings. These heartbreaking incidents serve as stark reminders of the critical need for emotional awareness, mental health support, and a safe environment for our children.

At I Would Rather Be Reading (IWRBR), we believe that every child deserves access to the tools and care that nurture emotional maturity and mental health. Through our after-school programs, we aim to bridge the gap for children, especially those from underserved communities. Studies have shown that after-school programs are essential for healthy development, providing academic enrichment and emotional support. Our programs are designed not only to help children excel academically but to give them the skills to manage their emotions, form healthy relationships, and respond to challenges in positive ways.

For many children, especially those from overlooked and under-resourced neighborhoods, the struggles they face go beyond the classroom. Some children come from environments where they must take on adult responsibilities at a young age, caring for siblings or navigating unsafe home situations. Our program is not just about learning—it’s about having a safe retreat after school, a space where kids can feel secure, supported, and valued.

We believe that no child should be denied the opportunity to improve their emotional well-being and academic potential due to financial constraints. That’s why we provide all of our after-school programming free of charge. By making our programs accessible, we are ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the chance to thrive in an environment that promotes not only literacy but also self-awareness and emotional growth.

Our mission at IWRBR is to give children the tools to recognize their feelings, manage their emotions, and develop the resilience necessary to face the challenges ahead. Emotional intelligence is crucial, not just for individual well-being, but as a preventive measure against the kinds of tragic incidents we’re seeing with increasing frequency.

By nurturing emotional awareness and mental health in our students, we are helping to prevent the kind of violence, anger, and fear that often result from unaddressed emotional needs. We are investing in the future, ensuring that the children we reach have the skills to handle stress, avoid destructive behaviors, and create positive futures for themselves and their communities.

The issues at hand with our youth are urgent, and they require a comprehensive solution. At IWRBR, we are doing our part to provide children with a safe space, quality programming, and the support they need to flourish emotionally and academically. We are committed to changing the narrative for our youth—one child at a time, one program at a time.

Together, we can create a safer, more emotionally aware future for all children.
